Are we regressing in our world? Like what continual progression is being made for issues like racism? Today I saw a tweet that was like ‘advertisements this week’ and then had pics of three advertisements produced this week. Having sat in a media class for 4 years of my life and just generally having a brain, I don’t understand how this is happening. I often look around my media class and think these are the people who will most likely influence some form of media one day and for the most part, I think we all know who the exception is lol, I’m happy to be in that class with those people cos I think they’ll have a positive influence. But then I think we’re not much younger than young advertisers today. The young advertisers who are allowing such blatant racism to take place in front of their eyes.

Sometimes idk what’s worse ppl who are ignorant and racist or the people who don’t stand up against it. Who are the people who stand by whilst someone is racist, homophobic or sexist? I’ve been in SO many situations when I’m the only person to stand up to someone. Afterwards ppl are like yeah ‘I would’ve said that’ or ‘wow that was so good!’ And I’m like how is that a good thing?? cos I am literally standing up for what I know is right. I’m not extra confident or just extra in general for saying my view on a matter in public. Like you can do it and it’s actually so exciting like terrifying aswell, but being in an argument fighting for what you KNOW is right is thrilling!!

For someone to say ‘I would’ve done something’ is so poor. Like I’ve been in so many situations where people have told me something disgusting someone has said and I’ve been like ‘omg!! What did u say?!!’ And they just say ‘oh I couldn’t really say anything cos he won’t change his mind’ and from this I see it’s not about changing someone’s mind or bashing their opinion, it’s about letting them know u think their opinion is shit.

I just don’t think you can’t get away with saying nothing anymore cos it’s just lazy. If you’ve stood by when someone’s being obviously and purposefully sexist then how can u say ur a feminist? And if someone’s been obviously racist in front of your eyes, why wouldn’t u fight against racism?? If you don’t stand up for and stand by your beliefs, then are they even your beliefs or are u just saying they are so u look like a good person??

I think it’s very easy nowadays to make a pretty tumblr post and make it light pink and say ‘feminism matters’ in a cute font. It’s easy to retweet a tweet with the hashtag ‘#blacklivesmatter’. And it’s easy to put a poster up in ur classroom and say ‘some people are gay get over it’. But when it comes down to it, do you actually STAND UP for people’s rights?? Or do u just retweet and like some shit? I’m not saying retweeting or sharing is bad, I actually think it’s good cos you have the power to put something powerful right in front of someone’s face on their timeline. But if that’s all ur doing is that enough?? (!!)

I’m writing this cos I want more people to stand up for what they believe and what they want. Every time I call someone out for being ignorant I am TERRIFIED like it’s not easy to do like I get so scared but I know I’ve got to do it cos I know no one else will. Why should we be scared to call someone out on being racist or sexist or homophobic when the person with sexist, homophobic or racist views is so happy to talk about their personal view on the world. An ignorant view on the world.

I know most people reading this will probs be white and straight, so use ur white privilege as a tool to benefit minorites. cos u, if ur a white straight male, are certainly not in one. Don’t ever say ‘well it doesn’t effect me’ cos that’s dumb as hell.

I know people might see this post as being controversial but were u gunna say it?? And just so u know I won’t stop fighting for the things I care about until the ice caps stop melting so if u want me to shut up, stop buying products with palm oil in them xo
